| 'The Wave' is one of Aivazovsky's most celebrated works and one of the most powerful paintings of nineteenth-century marine art. A vast mass of water rises on the left of the canvas, translucent at its crest and dark at its foot, as if the ocean were showing the viewer its inside. On the right, a ship with broken masts is breathing its last, and around it the figures of castaways scattered in the water look like fading sparks. A composition in which the wave's scale becomes an almost abstract symbol - a power greater than any story. A reproduction of this work brings a dignified, cinematic tone to any interior. It is not an easy painting - but that is precisely why it becomes a classic whose presence changes a room. |
