| Aivazovsky's Tempest is like a story that begins with a dark thunder at the top of the canvas and flows down to the bright, almost emerald crests of the waves. At the centre, a solitary sailing ship sinks in the hazy light, rigging slack and mast tilted, like a wounded bird trying to stay aloft. In the foreground, against the horror, a more intimate drama unfolds: a small boat with a huddled group of castaways fights for every metre of water. Their silhouettes, oars and shoulders give the picture the pulse of human hope. The canvas is a full, emotional symphony of the elements, in which the painter can, with a single accent - a faint glimmer deep inside - point the way to rescue. Aivazovsky's romanticism in its purest form. |
