A young girl stands in the foreground, and behind her unfolds the whole theatre of Norwegian nature — the fjord, the steep slopes and a sky washed clean. Hans Dahl combines here two of his favourite motifs: a fresh, light-filled female figure and the monumental landscape of the North. The meeting of these two elements gives the painting a special force, where intimacy sits beside boundlessness. The light treats the girl's face and dress almost caressingly, drawing out the blush of her cheeks and the softness of the fabrics. In the background, nature keeps its gravity but does not intimidate — rather it surrounds the heroine like a natural, familiar environment. Dahl builds no distance between the human being and the landscape; on the contrary, he shows them as a unity in which the girl seems to be a daughter of this place. There is in this painting a promise of a quiet, good life close to nature — a vision that, at the turn of the century, drew collectors across Europe.
