Filippo Lippi creates one of the tenderest images of the early Renaissance — a Virgin of slender, almost ethereal beauty, set against a bright window beyond which a delicate, misty landscape unfolds. Her lowered eyelids and praying hands radiate devotion, while the gauzy transparency of her veil and the tiny pearls in her hair reveal the painter's unrivalled craft. The composition is enlivened by two angels, one of whom — caught in a mischievous, almost childlike smile — looks straight at the viewer, softening the solemnity of the scene with warmth and immediacy. The Christ Child, held up by the angels, reaches toward his Mother in a gesture full of tenderness, balancing the sacred with everyday human closeness. The work dazzles with luminous colour, soft modelling and the innovative introduction of a realistic landscape behind a religious scene. This very painting shaped Italian Marian imagery for decades, inspiring artists such as Sandro Botticelli — a meeting of piety and the purest beauty, and a masterpiece of the Florentine Quattrocento. Tradition holds that the model for the Madonna's face may have been Lucrezia Buti, the young woman with whom the friar Filippo Lippi formed a forbidden bond and who became the mother of his son, the painter Filippino Lippi. The work is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
