When the harvest was over and the gleaners had finished their foraging, fires of weeds and dry brush were lit on the emptied fields. Daniel Ridgway Knight captures exactly such a moment: country women, wrapped in warmer clothing, tend the flames whose smoke drifts and dissolves into the pale autumn air. It is everyday, almost invisible labour, to which the painter lends a quiet dignity. Knight was a master of light and detail. Every fold of a skirt, every clod of earth and blade of grass is described with tender precision, while the flat, overcast autumn sky bathes the scene in a soft, even glow. A palette of warm browns, ochres and muted greens evokes the mood of the year's decline, the moment when nature slows and people prepare for the coming winter. Though the artist drew on the peasant tradition of Millet, he deliberately rejected its harsh realism. His countrywomen are not crushed by poverty — they radiate calm, serenity and natural nobility. It is an idealised yet respectful vision of rural life that enchanted collectors on both sides of the Atlantic and still charms with its harmony and warmth. Painted in 1884 and signed by the artist in Paris, the work dates from the period when Knight lived and worked at Poissy on the Seine. In composition and subject it recalls Jules Breton's celebrated 'Les Mauvaises Herbes' of 1869, which the American painter may have known through popular engravings.
