On the shore, in the shade of mighty trees, the Trojan women kindle flames against the hulls of the ships – weary of wandering, they long to halt the journey and settle on new land. Fire blossoms within the Arcadian scenery like an unsettling counterpoint to the luminous bay. With masterful subtlety Lorrain balances the elements: water and land, the silence of nature and the violence of human action, the cool blue of the sea and the warm tongues of flame. The architecture in the distance and the slender masts build a rhythm of verticals, while the light – as ever with this painter – becomes the true protagonist, binding everything into a harmonious, almost musical composition.
