From the river's right bank, beneath the Augustus Bridge, the eye is led toward a city of domes and towers — the silhouette of the golden age of the Saxon capital, once called the "Florence on the Elbe." The painter composes the panorama with almost cartographic accuracy, while giving it a breadth and monumental sweep that takes the breath away. Light plays the leading role here. It falls softly on the façades, drawing out subtle differences in the colour of the stone and spreading across the broad mirror of the river, in which the whole city is reflected. The sky, expansive and full of air, completes the sense of spaciousness. Small figures on the bank and boats on the water introduce the everyday rhythm of life while underscoring the grandeur of the architecture above them. This is a veduta that is at once a portrait of a city and a tribute to its power. Dresden in the age of Augustus is immortalised at its zenith, as an ambitious, cosmopolitan capital proud of its architecture. Looking at the painting today, we feel a nostalgia for a vanished world, but also admiration for the precision and sensitivity with which the painter captured the spirit of a particular place and time.
