Gierymski's Orange Seller is one of the most moving portraits in Polish painting. An elderly woman, worn by life, holds her basket of oranges and gazes at the viewer from beneath her headscarf; her face — full of dignity and quiet toil — tells more than many an elaborate historical scene. It is a painting that refuses to let us pass by indifferent. The artist builds the whole from masterfully chosen, muted tones, out of which a warm, almost luminous patch of fruit emerges. This contrast — the grey of poor everyday life against saturated orange — becomes the heart of the composition. Gierymski paints with tenderness and precision at once, treating every detail with the gravity owed to a great subject. Within this humble figure lies a universal tale of human endurance and of the world of Warsaw's poor at the close of the 19th century.
