| The monumental peak of the Matterhorn rises above the valley like a luminous cathedral of ice and stone, its snowy ridge seeming to absorb all the light carried by the alpine sky. Bierstadt composes the view with breadth in which the sublimity of the mountains borders on an almost religious focus. The foreground breathes with the soft green of meadows and the hue of russet rocks, while a rushing stream breaks through the grassy slope like a living vein of the landscape.
