This is one of the fullest examples of Cuyp's mature style — a broad river panorama steeped in the warm glow of the closing day. An elegant horseman and a group of peasants meet in the foreground, their conversation as unhurried as the light spreading over the valley. The painter leads the eye into the depth through subtle planes — from the sunlit figures, across the surface of the river, to distant hills blurred in a golden haze.
