In the warm, languid light of an afternoon, young herdsmen rest among their cows, and the whole scene breathes calm and pastoral harmony. Aelbert Cuyp, the undisputed master of painting cattle, sets the massive silhouettes of the animals against a vast, golden landscape in which sky, earth and air all seem steeped in the same honeyed glow.
