Captured in an expressive, almost airborne pose, he becomes the very embodiment of the joy named in the title. His tarantella is watched with fascination by the assembled women, dressed in the traditional, colourful costumes of the Roman countryside. On the right, in the shadow of ancient arches overgrown with dense ivy, a shepherd can be seen, his gaze drifting towards the revellers while goats graze lazily around him. The key attribute here is the decaying architecture itself: ancient arches stand directly beside lush, uncontrolled vegetation, symbolising the relentless passage of time and nature’s triumph over the fragile empire of humankind.

The space of the painting enchants with its depth and layered construction, forming the very essence of the idealised Romantic landscape. A hill with an ancient temple, illuminated by the rays of the setting sun, and a powerful rocky massif crowned with a fortress dominate the scenery, uniting the severity of geological forms with the harmony of classical architecture. Cole builds the mood through a masterful play of light and shadow: the warm, golden light of Italy floods the horizon, contrasting with the cool blue of the sky and delicate, feather-like clouds, giving the whole scene the dreamlike, nostalgic character of the Italian South.

The superb handling of aerial perspective makes the distant mountain ranges on the horizon seem almost to dissolve into an ethereal, cloud-lit glow. The colour scheme rests on a refined contrast between the deep, earthy greens and browns of the foreground and the pastel, luminous palette of sky and water. The flawless rendering of cracked, moss-covered stones in the ruins, the meticulously drawn water-lily leaves in the foreground and the mirror-like reflection of the figures in the crystal-clear water all testify to outstanding technical mastery. “L’Allegro” is a vision of nature as a source of solace and wonder — a Romantic praise of the beauty of a world in which humankind finds peace.

A fascinating iconographic context for this work lies in the fact that it is a direct painterly translation of literature into the language of canvas. Both the title and the mood of the painting were drawn from John Milton’s seventeenth-century poem “L’Allegro”, a hymn to joy and to the cheerful human spirit. Cole painted the work on commission for the distinguished New York patron Charles M. Leupp, as a pendant to “Il Penseroso”, a companion painting inspired by Milton’s second poem, devoted to melancholy and contemplation. Interestingly, although the painting presents a thoroughly Italian, classical landscape born of the artist’s longing for Europe, Cole created it in his studio in Catskill, New York, proving that the most beautiful Arcadian landscapes are born above all in the imagination of a brilliant creator.

DETAILS

Title: L'Allegro (or Italian Sunset)
Original title: L'Allegro (of Italian Sunset)
Artist: Thomas Cole
Date: 1845
Place of origin: Catskill, Nowy Jork, USA
Type : Painting
Technique: Oil on canvas
Genre: Pejzaż idealizowany (alegoryczny)
Style: Romantyzm (Hudson River School)
Form: Painting
