Her loose dark hair spills in a wave across the white linens, while her raised hand supports a brightly coloured parrot whose outspread wings bring a note of the exotic and a sense of movement to the composition. Courbet models the body with velvety softness, joining the smoothness of skin with the tangible materiality of the fabrics – the whole radiates warmth and an almost palpable human presence.

The entire painting is held in a deep, warm tonality, in which the illuminated body of the model contrasts with the dark, dense backdrop of overgrown landscape and richly folded drapery. This juxtaposition builds an atmosphere of intimacy and hidden tension – the viewer becomes witness to a private, unguarded moment torn from the ordinary rhythm of life. The shimmering patch of the parrot's plumage leads the eye upward, enlivening the otherwise static pose and introducing an element of unpredictable vitality.

In this seemingly classical scene the nude ceases to be an idealised goddess and becomes a woman of flesh and blood – sensual, free, unkempt. Courbet rejects the mythological costume, offering instead the truth of the body and of mood. The work captivates with its bold union of academic finesse and realistic candour, and to this day it fascinates, provokes and draws the eye with an intensity that only great painting can achieve.

Painted in 1866, this was the first nude by Courbet to be accepted at the Paris Salon – an earlier attempt in 1864 had been rejected as indecent. Despite critics' complaints about the model's "ungainly pose" and "disheveled hair," the canvas won the admiration of a younger generation of artists: Édouard Manet began his own version of the subject the same year, and Paul Cézanne is said to have carried a photograph of the work in his wallet. The model was likely Joanna Hiffernan, the Irish muse and lover of both Courbet and Whistler. The same rocky crag we recognise in the other parts of the cycle barely rises above the rooftops, almost swallowed by human achievement. Yet within this saturation of splendour hides a subtle unease: the world seems too sated, too sure of itself, as if at the peak of a curve from which it can only descend.

The painting is the third, central scene of the five-part cycle 'The Course of Empire' and depicts the climax of flowering — the apogee of wealth, power and pride, after which, as we know from the later parts, destruction and desolation will come. Cole deliberately turns this splendour into a warning: dazzling power already contains the seed of its own fall. It is at once a tribute to human achievement and a bitter meditation on the impermanence of all glory.

The cycle was created between 1833 and 1836 for the New York patron Luman Reed, while Cole worked at a time when America was vividly debating the fate of the republic and the spectre of tyranny. 'The Consummation of Empire' is the most elaborate and densely populated canvas of the series, today held with the others at the New-York Historical Society and regarded as one of the most ambitious narrative paintings of the age.

DETAILS

Title: The Course of Empire: The Consummation of Empire
Original title: The Course of Empire: The Consummation of Empire
Artist: Thomas Cole
Date: 1835-1836
Place of origin: Nowy Jork, USA
Type : Painting
Technique: Oil on canvas
Genre: Pejzaż alegoryczny (malarstwo historyczne)
Style: Romantyzm (Hudson River School)
Form: Painting

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1011/0517/2828/files/Thomas_Cole_-_The_Course_of_Empire_the_Consummation_of_Empire_-_Full.jpg?v=1780416611
leonardo-da-vinci-dama-z-gronostajem
Leonardo Da Vinci - Lady with an Ermine

Lady with an Ermine

Leonardo Da Vinci

A young woman turns gently to the side, as though someone has just entered the room. Van Gogh does not paint the sky as the eye sees it, but as the soul feels it: pulsing, cosmic, trembling with energy. Thick, undulating brushstrokes give each star a halo, and the whole firmament seems to breathe and turn in a ceaseless dance.

Below stretches a quiet, slumbering town with a slender church spire pointing skyward, while on the left a dark, slender cypress shoots upward like a flame linking earth to the stars. This collision of calm and ecstasy, of silence and cosmic unrest, creates a tension that makes this one of the most hypnotic works in the history of art. Blues and yellows clash here with dramatic intensity.

The Starry Night is more than a nocturnal landscape — it is a vision, a spiritual record of longing for the infinite and reconciliation with the vastness of the universe. The painting speaks the universal language of emotion, in which everyone finds their own solitude, hope and wonder. On a wall it becomes a window opened onto something far greater than the everyday — the starry boundlessness of human imagination.

Van Gogh painted this work in June 1889 while voluntarily staying at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The view stretched from the window of his room, yet the village with its church spire and the cypresses were added from memory and imagination. He wrote to his brother Theo of his deep desire to paint the night sky. Today the painting hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and remains one of the most famous works of art in the world.

DETAILS

Title: The Starry Night
Original title: De sterrennacht
Artist: Vincent Van Gogh
Date: 1889
Place of origin: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Type : Painting
Technique: Oil on canvas
Genre: Pejzaż nocny
Style: Post-Impressionism
Form: Painting

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1011/0517/2828/files/Vincent_Van_Gogh_-_The_Starry_Night_-_Full.jpg?v=1780432642
rachel-ruysch-wazon-z-kwiatami
Rachel Ruysch - Vase with Flowers

Vase with Flowers

Rachel Ruysch

3 Cze 1664 – 12 Sie 1750

From a dark, almost velvety background emerges a bouquet of remarkable richness — roses, tulips, poppies and small wildflowers woven into a composition that seems to breathe with a life of its own. As the daughter of the eminent anatomist Frederik Ruysch, she drew on her father's natural collections; her paintings fetched higher prices than works by Rembrandt, and she remained active almost until the age of eighty.

DETAILS

Title: Vase with Flowers
Original title: Vaas met bloemen
Artist: Rachel Ruysch
Date: ok. 1700
Place of origin: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Type : Painting
Technique: Oil on canvas
Genre: Martwa natura kwiatowa
Style: Holenderski Złoty Wiek
Form: Painting

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1011/0517/2828/files/Rachel_Ruysch_-_Vase_with_Flowers_-_Full.jpg?v=1780438319
santiago-rusinol-female-figure
Santiago Rusiñol - Female Figure

Female Figure

Santiago Rusiñol

25 Lut 1861 – 13 Cze 1931

The figure of a woman emerges here from the painterly matter almost as if from a dream — hushed, absorbed, wrapped in a mood of reverie. Cupid slips from the bed at dawn, casting the viewer a triumphant, almost mischievous glance, while Psyche still sleeps, unaware. This is no sweet image of romance but a sharp observation of the interplay of desire, naivety and power.

The mastery of neoclassical drawing reveals itself in every inch: bodies sculpted by light, meticulously rendered fabrics, a cool, almost marble flesh. David forgoes idealisation for a surprising realism – Cupid is an adolescent with earthy, sun-tanned skin, lending the scene a piquant, almost everyday truthfulness.

The tension between classical form and psychological candour makes this a singular work. Beneath the smooth surface of the myth lies a reflection on the fleeting nature of passion and on how easily love can be a game played by one side. The canvas attracts with elegance yet detains the viewer with a question it poses without words.

The painting was made in 1817, while David lived in exile in Brussels after Napoleon's fall. Commissioned by an Italian collector, it startled contemporaries precisely by abandoning idealised beauty for the blunt, almost provocative realism of Cupid's figure.

DETAILS

Title: Cupid and Psyche
Original title: L'Amour et Psyché
Artist: Jacques-Louis David
Date: 1817
Place of origin: Brussels, Belgium
Type : Painting
Technique: Oil on canvas
Genre: Malarstwo mitologiczne (akt)
Style: Klasycyzm (neoklasycyzm)
Form: Painting

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1011/0517/2828/files/Jacques-Louis_David_-_Love_and_Psyche_-_Full.webp?v=1780447877
johannes-vermeer-dziewczyna-z-perla
Johannes Vermeer - Girl with a Pearl Earring

Girl with a Pearl Earring

Johannes Vermeer

Paź 1632 – Gru 1675

Out of the darkness of the background emerges a face that has refused to release our gaze for more than three centuries. The blue-and-gold turban, the softly falling cloth and a single luminous pearl at the ear — these are the accents that flare against an impenetrable black.
